Good to see I'm not the only one having problems, I felt alone until I came here!
Anyway, I'm not totally convinced that this is Orange's fault, but if anyone has any ideas I'd be incredibly grateful. I have an Orange 2mb connection, I use WinXP sp2 and a Belkin wireless modem/router F5D7632. Here's the problem:
A couple of months ago my wife was on the web when we had a colossal system crash. When I rebooted, we got 30 seconds use out of the machine before it locked up again. I had to reinstall my OS, and when I got it working again I had no internet connection. My router appears to be working - all the lights are on and appear normal, and the wireless icon in the system tray indicates I am connected to the router, full strength, displays my SSID so I know it's the right network etc.
However, I can't access my router login page, and I can't access the web. i took the router to another PC to check the settings were all OK, and everything was the same as before the crash, login page appeared OK so I'm pretty sure the router is functioning. I've virused and spyware-checked, all OK. I can ping the router, do tracert and it pings external IPs, but won't resolve any websites at all. I have been told I have a DNS problem (by a friend who is a network engineer), something has corrupted, but no idea how to fix it. Everything else on the machine appears to have restored correctly, no other errors.
If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them. I really don't want to have to take the machine to PC World to repair but it's getting beyond the realm of my fixit abilities!
Thanks, just spotted that on another page, will try it tonight. Might that explain why I can't access my router login page too? I've also been told to try ipconfig /flushdns.
That never happened in my case....I'm using a Belkin F5D7633 and could always access the login page.
Symptoms I had was being able to access only certain web sites (Google, Orangeproblems, local council etc) but not BBC, my bank, London Stock Exchange etc.
Your symptoms seem to be different so the OpenDNS may not work for you. Before you change anything check your access to Google and Orangeproblems pages.
Thanks - doesn't seem like I'll do any harm by trying it, it would just clear the cache. I really don't understand why I can't connect to my router login page though, I've tested the cable and router elsewhere so I know they're both working, and my network port appears to be OK...very strange.

TO TEST NETWORK CONNECTION:
Are you sure that you have a network card in the computer - I know it sounds daft - but they look very similar to modems.
(Start - All Programs - Accessories)
Open Command Prompt
Ping 192.168.1.1 -t
Control C to stop
For info purposes this command does a continuous loopback ping to the router. Without the -t it only does it 4 times. Its a means of quickly checking connectivity between PC and router.
If no connection will say:
Destination host unreachable.
Check into Network Connections through the control panel. Double click your local area connection. What status does it show? If connected go into the support tab, what does it show in there?
You could also right click the connection and repair it.
There could be a problem with network cable - try another one. Also if you are in the red socket on the Livebox try the yellow one.
There could be a problem with network card or drivers - first try re-installing drivers - re-boot computer.
If still no luck I would physically take network card out of computer - re-boot computer, then turn off. Re-install network card and allow XP to to find and install it.

Well if you can ping out it shows the connection itself is working. Not being able to bring up the router pages means there's something else wrong, it's not DNS problem as that simply prevents web addresses working IP's should always work.
It could be:
A system issue, something actually wrong or corrupt with the browser or networking system.
Some sort of software preventing the connection, mis-configured firewall etc.
A proxy server set.
For a proxy go into internet options,
Connections tab,
LAN settings button,
Untick the proxy option if ticked,
Restart and test it out.
Thanks very much Elhana, I'll try those. I think it must be something that corrupted in my system during the crash and has not been corrected by subsequent restores / reinstalls. Brought my router into work today to test it out again and test the cables.
Tried pinging out again last night just to be sure - pinged BBC, Google, all fine, did a tracert to both which worked fine so I'm guessing the line is also OK - though I pinged Orange and got no response which I thought was perhaps a little ironic!
Well, almost a month on and the PC is repaired. Was a firewall buried deep in the system that wasn't showing up anywhere, hence no connection and no explanation. So Orange are, unfortunately, off the hook!
However, totally coincidentally, just got off the phone from an unsolicited sales call from the big O. Bright and breezy Scottish lass who was trying to persuade me how much better my life would be if I swapped to the 8MB package and took their phone service aswell. I pointed her to this page and how many problems people had been having with the 8MB connection, and that as my 2MB connection was working fine I was not inclined to rock the boat.
"OK," she said, "then how about our starter package, 2MB, 2GB download limit for £14.99 per month?"
Well as that's what I'm already on, I'll take the price reduction, minimal as it is.
"Fine, I can set that up for you now. I just need you to enter into an 18 month agreement with us"
At this point I spit coffee across the room. Why 18 months? To be honest, I was thinking of switching.
"Well, anyone you switch to will ask you to enter into an 18 month contract."
That being total balls, I hung up and will request my MAC code tomorrow. Recommendations for new service, anyone? Not Sky, I don't want Sky TV. Just faster, cheaper reliable broadband, using my own wireless modem router and the BT phone line.
