I have Orange broadband (2mb) connected to a Belkin G+ MIMO router. I have an XBox 360 wired to the router and also a laptop from which I can access the web wirelessly. Xbox works fine. Laptop works ok(ish)- see below
My problem (which has been going on for weeks) is that each time I connect my desktop PC to the router- whether wired or wirelessly, and try to connect to the web, the PC hangs. This is not a hardware issue- I've tried it with two different PCs with the same result. Also, both PCs connect to the web fine if I take them into work (different ISP), and connect via an identical router. I don't think it is a software issue either- I've tried using both Firefox and IE6, in both cases with the browser plug-ins turned off. I've also tried with and without firewall installed. I've also run two different spyware cleaners and two different virus checkers.
Access to the web via the laptop is a bit slow, and a small number of sites cannot be accessed (eg hotmail) but the laptop never hangs.
My router is currently set to PPPoE, LLC, 0/38 1432 MTU. I tried changing this to PPPoA, VC/MUX, 0/38 1432 MTU but then the laptop could no longer access the web. I also tried PPPoE with VC/MUX but with the same result. Not actually sure what the correct settings should be- can someone advise?
You say the PC's "hang", how so exactly? Does the whole system freeze up? Just internet explorer? Internet explorer simply not able to bring anything up at all?
As for router settings usually the second set you listed (PPPoA, VC/MUX, 0/3 should be fine. MTU is adjustable for each PC and you may want to try tweaking that to see if it helps, certainly could explain a few things if it was down to MTU.
When I say 'hang' I mean the system freezes completely (Ctrl Alt Del does not bring up task manager). Neither is this is temporary- I tried waiting and there was no change after 30 minutes.
I tried adjusting router settings to PPPoA etc but it could not then find the internet connection- although I did only leave it for 5-10 minutes. Might it take longer than that?
If these settings are wrong, I struggling to understand why the laptop still works but the desktop PC hangs every time...
Dont mean to crash your post, but my PC hangs if I use a Speedtouch 330 to connect in place of the Livebox. It hangs (no alt, ctrl, del) the instant the connection tothe internet is made. Fine upto the point on connection. If I dont connect and just leave the modem wired up and plugged in everything is fine. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling from CD, tried updated drivers. Still hangs on connect.
Like I say, don't mean to bounce your post but the symptom appers to be identical, just with different setup.
My general thinking is the router sends some completely messed up signals down the ethernet cable that the PC just cannot handle. This would be extremely rare and usually means the router is faulty or damaged in some way.
The connection settings on the router should not effect the PC as it simply passes data back and forth and aren't directly used by the PC.
If you use your router on another line and it does the same thing on a completely different physical connection then it more than likely means it's the router.
Alternatively I'd say it could be the PC being somehow compromised, although two different systems and using 2 anti-virus checkers should rule that out, or some sort of network card/networking system driver error that when it's triggered just kills windows. If the systems use different network cards/chipsets this is less likely but if the router is also is not acting within specifications then it could just be a driver bug.
