For the past two weeks ive had the dreaded PPP server down problem. Several of the famous line tests done that gave no results and many calls to Orange. Still nothin. Last night however we rang them and gave them a huge earful. Well it was sorted at threee o clock this morning suprise.
However heres my new issue.
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 23.8
Attenuation (dB) : 47.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 6080
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 2272 288
The engineer phoned this morning.
They have downgraded the line back to two meg as they think the line was having too much information thrown at it. Funny how they did that to my friends 7.6 meg line on the same exchange.
But my problem wasnt that the connection was unstable it was thier stupid PPP server.
So anyone think im being fobbed off with that poor excuse.
Yep, absolutely being fobbed off. Had the same thing done to my line after PPP server down, downgraded to 2M then downgraded to 1M. Took me 4 weeks and lots of hassle to overcome their standard response "1M is the fastest speed that your line will sustain" - total b*****ks! My line sustained 4M before for months and has now sustained 4+M. after I complained to Orange Head Office ad the ISPA.

Appears to be a fixed 2mb line.
I can only think that they are so oversubscribed on that exchange that they are pegging customers back. Simple maths means that they can have 4 customers instead of one on up to 8mb.
They are certainly struggling to sort this out.
Meanwhile customers are leaving - I suppose this will help them sort it out quicker.

Capacity shouldn't be involved in the connection to the PPP server, after all it just has to authenticate the connection not provide all the bandwidth from how I understand it but I could be wrong.
Downgrades to speed for issues like this on LLU are pretty common, seems to be one of the standard fixes applied by the engineers. It is however one of the more visible fixes so it's noticed a lot more to us so I've no idea exactly how common it is.
