I too, have had an unexplained slow-down of my connection with vista. After trying things, and after visiting Orange problems, ( found whilst trying to sort the fault ), i was convinced that it was Orange and the livebox, that was at fault. What was weird, was that there are 2 other computers running XP, in the house, using the same connection in wireless mode. They were NOT having any problems at all. web pages , downloads , uploads, nothing. Orange say , it is advisible to make the first connection by means of a wired connection, which i did, by means of an ethernet cable. At first no problem, 3 computers and users quite happy. Then for no apparent reason i had serious speed problems. It turned out that my ethernet cable connection, which is Realtek RTL8139/810x family fast ethernet NIC driver had been updated through the Vista/Windows updates. This driver version was 6.0 something. The one before was 5.6 something. I used device manager to find out what was installed. I rolled back the driver to 5.6, and everything has been perfect since. Obviously the 6.0 driver is total crap. If you have this connection, try it please.
Like everyone else, the connection speed has deteriorated until it is currently 600Kbps!!! Again I have being trying to get some assistance for over 2 months but have found that Technical Support have no technical knowledge and Customer Care don't care. However, after numerous costly phone calls and letter - a breakthrough. Today I have been told that in January, Orange replaced BT equipment with its own in exchanges. This was supposed to improve connectivity BUT "in some cases, it has not gone as well as planned"!

It does make u wonder who configures their network its a mess, and is left to the customers to work out that changing to PPPoE temporarily resolves it.

We've never had more than 512 even though they say we're on 8 Meg.
