The MAC is valid for 30 days and a new one can't be generated until the old one expires. Providing what you have matches the one on Orange's system then there's not much more they'll be able to do.
What Orange haven't told you (because I believe they don't know) is that you need to "tweak" various settings on your PC. This varies from case to case but will include :-
1. MTU setting
2. RWIN setting
3. DNS server
4. PPPoA
5. PPPoE
6. SMTP server
........OK, try this for starters, run the following and see what the results advise :-
Yes, but if that site is one of the ones you can't access you're stuck.
Can anyone explain (in language a computer illiterate can follow) where and how and what to change to be able to surf the internet again (Windows 2000).

UNABLE TO ACCESS WEB PAGES - SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS
The cause of this is incorrect network adapter Maximum Transmission Unit or MTU setting. You need to change the MTU setting on the computer using DRTCP.
If you can not access the site you will have to obtain the programme from a friend or at work. Once you have the programme double click on it to run.
First make a note of the current settings.
Fill in the programme settings as per the web pages above - SAVE - EXIT and reboot computer.
If you can not access the pages to see settings then they are as follows:
TCP Receive Window = First try 55600 with 1430 below. Then try 51048 with 1458. (RWIN)
Window Scaling = Yes
Time Stamping = No
Selective Acks = Yes
Dial Up (RAS) MTU = First try 1430 if no luck try 1458
Path MTU discovery = Yes
Black hole detection = default
MAx duplicate Acks = 2
TTL = 64
If you are using a USB modem put the MTU value in Dial Up (RAS) MTU
If you are using a network card to connect to router put the MTU value as follows. Select your Ethernet Card (NIC) under Adapter Settings and enter there.
If you are using a wireless connection select your wireless adapter under Adapter Settings and enter there.
Once you can access webpages go to pages above to calculate your best RWIN depending on the speed of your connection. You can also optimise the settings at: http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
Im having the same problem as u all, it first started as intermittent connections, and now its just pathetically slow, im getting download speeds of 29kbps or less, and gaming is almost impossible , several hours of calling all i get is "sir please check these settings" the manual thrown at me basically, and i know for a fact it is nothing to do with my computers or router.
I WANT OUT!!! but i dont know when its up for renewal... can they extend the contract with out asking? it should be 12 months soon the next week or so and i want to catch it ASAP so i can leave and not pay anything.
Ring Orange and get your MAC code so that you can move to a real ISP.
They will probably try hard to persuade you to saty with them.
They often offer alsorts of rubbish to avoid losing customers - free 6 months, speed upgrade etc.
DO NOT be taken in by this or you will end up stuck in for another 12 months.
Regardless of any remaining contract they have to, by law, issue you with a MAC.
Once you have moved any remaining balance can be settled as you are near the end of your contract it will not be much.
Personally I wouldn't pay a penny once I had my MAC as they have broken the contract.
Be sure also to cancel your direct debit to them after you leave or they will rob you further.
they havnt really broken the contract as the sole purpose for them its to provide me with internet access which i have... just extremely slow. they cover themselves on the basis of "up to" 8mb, they could give me 1kbps and theres nothing i could do. However i opted for an update about 4months ago.. and im hoping that hasnt extended the contract, plus it changed my billing from £26 to £19.99, if it does count them im screwed for 8 months

AFAIK all package changes for at least the last 7 months have come with contract renewals.
You can get out without fee with speed issues but it's usually a little harder to get it agreed than if your connection isn't working or has disconnections.
Had all the same problems as most other people on here,
all started when they done the upgrade to 8meg! no connection for 6 days!
then on and off for weeks "pp-serverdown"
went o.k for weeks then the last about 2 months my speed has been pathetic "100 kb/s download speed" and worse! making browsing the web
very frustrating
About 50 phone calls later after been told they can see a problem, then
they cant! then its upgrade work been done and to bear with it!
on sunday after been told it could be a couple more months!
I asked for my MAC code and no more lies to keep me with them.
They said o.k & its been sent through the post.
This afternoon speeds increased alot to what ive had over the last 2 months? 3714 kb/s download ? any one else experienced this after asking for MAC code ?? or are speeds finaly getting back to normal
Any feedback would be useful while i wait to see if my MAC code turns up!
Are these new speeds any good ? web pages / videos loading a lot faster now.
probably will still swap isp as Orange think nothing of telling you lies!
or false promises "a tec engineer will call you back!" honest.
Not a very nice experience since these daylight robbers took over.
Todays test below, there was no past ones saved to show but the max
ive had over the last about 2 months is around 200kb/s but lows of 75kb/s! Fingers crossed it stays better.
