I've been a long time customer of Orange, wanadoo, Freeserve etc, as many of you have been, and have decided to finally upgrade to Orange brodband. yes I know there's problems and they are not particularly good, but after being with them since freeserve was actually launched it would be too much of a hassle and would actually cost me more to change to a different ISP. In either case it's Orange so that's not changing.
However we go through the Upgrade pages online only to find the message "A general Error Has Occurred" To find we cannot register at all!
A quick call to tech support (we wernt on hold or anything. Amazing given what I've read on here!) and we were told that they didnt know anything about it, try again in 24 hours. And of course 24 hours come, and it still isnt working. (Another call revealed we cant actually do anything untill tuesday)
So yet despite this, if we wanted to upgrade over the phone we were told we can't, unless we wanted it as a seperate account?
Good greif what are they on about here? sureley they can upgrade our account over the phone without loosing our original email address like you would do over the web!?
For once it seems they are activley avoiding upgrading an existing customer onto their "not-so-broad-minded-broad-band" service.
I mean, why cant they tell us that we can't register because they are doing maintanence!?And why don't their staff even know they are doing it?! Can't we have any service at all!?
Orange give people free broadband that doesn't work for thousands of people.
Moving to a real ISP will mean you get broadband that is fast and reliable.
If you get your MAC code and pass this onto a new ISP the change ovr is hassle free.
So many people get drawn into this 'free broadband' offer from Orange.
Amazing what the word 'free' or 'cheap' does to people - they go mad and flock for it by the thousand!

There has been some behind the scenes system updates the last day or so which prevented access to the member centre along with a few other things and it's likely that which prevented it from going through. I think it's all clear now if you still want to try upgrading that account.
cosmic and steve, I know, I really wish I didnt have to go with Orange, and I can assure you, if the descision was actually down to me, I'd be with Be faster than you can say... Bee *cough*. In either case the descision remains with my father as he is the primary user of the old style freeserve address. He has numerous accounts and so many things that are associated with the old address, that it physically would cost us both a fortune to get everything redirected and reset. Which is quite sad really.
Then again next year I'll be looking at a mortgage than I can have what I an afford (which at the rate I'm going will be AOL LIMIT TIME between hours of 2230 and 2231).
Fortunatley though this isnt the free offer, I don't like Orange and in all fairness, never have, Hence my phones are with other carriers (meaning I don't get to take advantage of the 5 pound offer. Oh shame)
No sadly we've got to stay with Orange on this one. And It's quite upsetting.
Elhana thanks very much for the info, unfortunatley were still unable to do the upgrade other the internet. Sounds like someone dropped a ball somewhere
