Like many of us, I started with Wanadoo and had no problems. Was on 2 meg contract and that's what I got, day and night, rain or shine. Then along came Orange and I signed up for "up to 8 meg unlimited".
Back in April I think, had an e-mail to say service was being upgraded. Noticed no difference until May 30th when suddenly I could not connect at all, or could only download a tiny amount of data, like a Google start page and nothing else, or the occasional text-only e-mail. An e-mail arrived on 2nd June saying the work had been done and I could look forward to an improved service. For about a day this was true, was getting speed up to 4.5 meg at times, but very variable - below 1 meg at times. Then the service became much more intermittent, sometimes working for part of the day, but sometimes not at all.
Various completely unhelpful calls to Orange then ensued. I did get the UK callcentre once, and the person I got then at least seemed to try to help, unlike the overseas ones.
After 4 whole days with no service at all, they then said they would do a line check. Since then I have had continuous service (for about a week now), but seems to be at a very constant speed, just under 2 meg. I don't know whether I was transferred to LLU and have now been taken off again (is that possible?), but I will definitely not be staying with Orange after the minimum contract time.
One question about a MAC code. If I ever do get one, what does it allow me to do? Surely I can just sign up for a new provider anyway?

Hi peter
You need a MAC to pass on to the new provider of your choice most ISP's migrate people with a MAC code free and usually takes between 5 and 10 days (once the MAC has been passed onto the new ISP) with only about 30 minutes downtime, the other alternative would be to cancel your contract wait till the tag has been removed from your line before you can order from a new provider it can sometimes take up to a month of downtime and a re-connection fee, a MAC code is the best route if you want to avoid any downtime.
Once you request a MAC off Orange they have to give it to you within 5 working days.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Steve, I understand now why its important to get the code. What happens if I'm still within the minimum contract period for Orange (after foolishly signing up for the supposed upgrade) though? Can they hold me to that or can I leave them without a penalty?

Wether your still in a contract or not they have to provide you with a MAC within 5 days, as for the penalty if you think you are not getting the service they advertise then put to them that a contract works BOTH ways and report them to Ofcom.
