Only what you and keith have already suggested d/load DRTCP at work he can zip it and email it to home if his emails are working via MailBigFile and use the values already advised reboot and see how it turns out just trial and error
MailBigFile its free if he can manage to access it that is its awkward isn't it

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys!
I can download programs onto a CD here at work and then run them at home. I have already tried this with DrTCP and the other one Network Optimiser. I can't see an MTU value on the former (unless you just fill in 1458, say). It's the tweaktester that only seems to run from the site.
I'm interested in the dial up idea - I don't have one at the moment - wouldn't this run into the same problems?
Finally, could I get a professional to help with this - could I take the laptop in somewhere, or would someone need to visit? Frankly the machine is useless without the sites I haven't got.

When you run DRTCP.EXE form the CD you should see a window headed "DR TCP (Windows2000/XP) below is an outlined box sub-headed "General Settings". You will see Tcp Receive Window (this is the RWIN) showing a figure. You will see in the 5th box below titled "Dial up (RAS) MTU with a figure.
Make a note of these figures.
Below this you will see "Adapter Settings" with a drop down, select your wireless adapter. To the right of this box you will see MTU. I suggest you start by using MTU 1430 and Tcp Receive Window 55600. Other boxes :-
Window Scaling = Yes
Time Stamping = No
Selective Acks =Yes
Path MTU discovery = Yes
Black hole detection = default
MAx duplicate Acks = 2
TTL = 64
SAVE this and EXIT. Re-boot and see if you can access web pages

Ref copy and paste - highlight the file DRTCP on the CD or disc, copy it and paste it into My documents on the hard drive. Then double click it to run, it will in fact run from the CD.

I think most points are covered above.
If you are using a USB modem put the MTU value in Dial Up (RAS) MTU
If you are using a network card to connect to router put the MTU value as follows. Select your Ethernet Card (NIC) under Adapter Settings and enter there.
If you are using a wireless connection select your wireless adapter under Adapter Settings and enter there.
Does it matter which DRTCP version I download and try to run at home? I should say I have Windows ME (the latest my laptop can take, apparently).
On other matters - Firefox - as I understand, no longer supported on ME or earlier. Doubt if I could access to download now anyway.
Dial-up - I tried Fast but using the Speedtouch modem it didn't seem to want to accept it.
Still all very frustrating.
Are you saying that you have resolved the web page access problem ?
I use DR TCP version 0.21.0.0 dated MArch 2002.
To use FAST dial-up you use your laptop's onboard modem :-
Disconnect the broadband cable from BT socket.
Disconnect telephone cable from BT socket.
Connect laptop's modem socket to BT phone socket (from where you unplugged the phone)

That's a good question, we all presume everyone is using XP.
The Following Windows OS's are supported by the newest version of DRTCP021.zip:
Well, it was not fixed when I last posted, nhyder, just expressing gratitude for all your efforts and free advice (including those by pm).
However
I have just downloaded a copy of DrTCP (from a datastick in the end), set the MTU from 0 which it said in the bottom right hand corner to 1430.
Pulled the data stick out, put the modem feed in.
This shut the computer down.
When I started up again, hey presto , I could access Hotmail etc.
I don't know if that means we have solved it between us, but once again, thanks for all your eadvice, and apologies to any others who have been patient with my private problems on this forum.
I am getting the same problem. I can access Google and OrangeProblems (phew!) but not a whole slew of others eg Yahoo, CNN, BBC, etc. The list of those that I can access is tiny compared to what I can't get to.
I'm running a Macbook but the same issue affects my Toshiba. For this reason I'd say that it isn't a local issue and is either a router config (but nothing has changed and I'm using NetGear not a sh*tty LiveBox) or Orange.
Taking into account the name of this website, I'll take a wild stab and say that the problem is with Orange.
I've tried called their Technical support but gave up after we'd strayed from his script and he got confused. I'll try again now and post any success. if anyone can suggest anything, I'd very much appreciate it.
