Ok 8MB Broadband former wanadoo using Speedtouch Modem.

Can take several attempts to connect...tonight the worst took 30 minutes and about 12 goes.

Each abortive attempt gets error message....server not responding.

Is this due to contention? or Orange?

If I don't disconnect on shut down will, when I start up still have the same connection?

Hello pluto,

I'm a 330 user too.
Instead of using the catchall suffix "@fs" in your connect/login id,
please try in succession one of the following after the @ sign,
when you try to reconnect:-

bb.freeserve.co.uk
bb1.freeserve.co.uk
bb2.freeserve.co.uk
bb3.freeserve.co.uk
bb4.freeserve.co.uk

eg: "your_domain@bb2.freeserve.co.uk"

Contention is usually the limited availability to supply bandwith as needed due to a spike in usage rather than limited availability to actually connect.

The PC powers the modem, when shutdown it will be disconnected as it'll lose power and have to re-establish a new connection when started up again.

Thanks for suggestions...

Tried the bb.freeserve method without success. More convinced now that this problem is occurs at busy times on the net e.g. now Sunday night.

Sounds like your service is becoming worse due to the jokers Orange getting worse themselves.
Move to a real ISP and watch your speed take off - I did and never looked back since.
