Just curious as to whether this is a regular problem. You'll love this. Not a lot .. but bare with me.
One day I came home to find I had only limited access to the net (after 4 or 5 months perfect connection). Some websites I could access but many I couldn't. I left it for a week or so as I assumed it was a wanadoo issue and that they'd fix it. I'd previously had no problems so didn't worry.
So after a week or so I phoned up support in India and had to keep appologising for a 'bad line' as I could barely understand a word the guy said. Eventually he assured me he could fix the problem and went through a check list, reseting this and that and setting all my TCP settings back to default (after I'd spent a week tweaking them to get the wireless to work). He said his plan was to reopen port 80. This was meaningless to me but he then told me to reboot and to phone back if it didn't work after the reboot. Foolishly thats what I did.
I lost web access altogether along with my outgoing mail.
The woman I spoke to next had an equally difficult to understand accent. She also assured me she could fix the problem. I explained what her colleague had gone through and what I'd done. She then proceeded to go through exactly the same despite my protestations until I almost shouted STOP.
I explained yet again what was happening and what her colleague had told me to do. Her reply was to REINSTALL INTERNET EXPLORER.
I paused as I didn't quite understand ..
I use Firefox I said .. IE is uninstalled. It's been uninstalled since I built the computer.
We don't support Firefox ... what? I said .. How can you not support Firefox? I use Firefox to browse the net. I have done since before I signed up with Wanadoo. Its always worked fine.
Then she got me ..
YOU HAVE TO GO BACK TO PCWORLD.
!!!
Why should I go back to PCWorld when I've never bought anything from them and why would she even suggest it when its never even been mentioned in the conversation. She explained that I had to go back to my supplier so they could reinstal IE for me. So I again emphasised that I don't use IE, that I use Firefox and that besides, I'd built the computer myself and didn't have a supplier.
Then she suggested I should go back to the company that SOLD ME FIREFOX.
Do you actually know what Firefox is? I ventured. Yes I do. We don't support Firefox so you need to go back to your supplier.
FIREFOX is FREE I gasped. You download it for free. I prefer it to Internet Explorer as does a huge percentage of the internet user base. Its a browser.
There was silence.
You need to reinstall Internet explorer she repeated.
Why? I asked.
Because its corrupted and broken and needs to be reinstalled.
SO, grasping at straws I suggested that maybe she meant that a service first installed with IE may have corrupted and needed fixing and that installing IE would reinstall the service and I could then uninstall IE again.
Yes, she said.
SO for the protection of my own sanity I did just that.
I've now been without web access for about 3 months and I'm too afraid to phone up and ask for help again. I don't know how much of my contract is left but they've regularly been taking money out of my account and now I'm getting angry. I found this site during my dinner break and thought I'd say hi.
I really am very sorry but you have just made me laugh so much......you have to send this story to Eric Abensur (eric.abensur@orange-ftgroup.com). Even he should get the joke.
He is Mr Orange Broadband based in an ivory tower.
Do a search on posts. Many of us have written letters and emails to him and also to Didier Lombard the CEO of France Telecom.
Ah. Haha. Right. Well I didn't expect to ever get back online with Orange but now I suppose its certainty.
So, out of curiosity does Port 80 have anything to do with my losing web and outgoing mail? If it does can anyone give me any pointers as to how to sort it? Or is this just a load of rubbish.

Hello Paddy,
Port 80 is the TCP/IP "channel" usually assigned for web page data
traffic. It is used by the http service (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol)
to upload and download web data.
Capillaryband: hmm. So it looks like the first guy may of been on the right track. Shame it all went stupid. I don't understand how that may of been closed.
nhyder: Cheers. I'll look there.
I'll also look at my mtu settings. Not entirly sure what they are but I've got a few different numbers to plug in. Sorry, I may use computers all day everyday but its hard enough getting to grips with applications. I've never got my head round networks.
Don't assume Port 80 was closed just because Indian call centre said they planned to re-open it !!.......you only need to look at the other comments re. IE and PCWORLD to know that there's a script which they follow.

Changed my router from PPPoA to PPPoE and set the MTU to 1492 and I appear to have everything working again! Now it looks like this solution has been around for a while so why couldn't the tech support tell me?
Oh hang on. Scratch that. I've still not got outgoing mail. Soooo close.
