Having sorted out the MTU problem a few weeks ago thanks to helpful people on this site and Dr Kitz. I now have another problem. I seem to happily connect and get a line, but that is it. Every time I try to contact to any website it cannot be found, this also affects my e-mail, as the site is not found. It is slightly different to the MTU problem in that there seems to be no recognition of any of the sites. Could this be the Orange server?
In case anyone was wondering I am using the library to access the internet!!!!
I think I'm affected by the same problem as elcadobes. At the moment I'm connected to the internet by my old BT dialup...
Everything appears to be fine with the livebox and the connection. There's no PPP Server Down message. It says I'm connected, and all the lights on the LB are as they should be, and the wireless network connection status is 'connected'.
However, I can't connect to any email servers or any web sites.
Does this sound like a symptom of Orange DNS failure, and if so, how do you switch to OpenDNS, using the addresses posted by capillaryband?

Hi Wendy,
I use a Speedtouch 330 modem, not a Livebox, but here goes...
Click on "Start" on Win desktop.
Click on "Connect To" in the Start Menu.
Right-click on your active connection icon.
Click on Properties.
Click on the Networking tab in the Properties dialogue box.
Click on the button "Properties", whilst "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"
is highlighted.
Click the radio button "Use the following DNS server addresses".
Type in the addresses I gave you.
"Preferred" is the primary address.
"Alternate" is the secondary address.
Click OK's to exit back out of the dialogue boxes.
Then reconnect. There's no need to reboot if you're running XP.

Veterans of this site have recently recommended OpenDNS as a
permanent alternative, especially because Orange DNS broke down
once before recently. You can toggle between Orange and OpenDNS
without any adverse effects, just to see how it's going.
I tried OpenDNS once before, but found that name resolution was slower
than Orange on that occasion. OpenDNS seems faster this time, so there
may have been a glitch at OpenDNS at that time. It certainly boasts that
it's fast, so go for it.
I've also had to use Googlemail's SMTP server for outbound email instead
of the Orange SMTP server. Orange's SMTP service has become unusable
for me.

I wish you well with it.

Haha those smtp servers were the bane of my life.
Googlemails smtp's are fine the only problems being it re-routes your mail if im correct so you get your googlemail address as a return address for any emails sent.
When you use smtp.orangehome.co.uk or freeserve wanadoo etc etc it actually resolves to a number of different mail servers. Usually it only 1 or 2 which are causing the problems it just these one are usually the ones which are shown preference. If you goto a site such as dnsstuff.com and do a DNS Lookup for smtp.orangehome.co.uk it will show you the servers which it resolves to. Set on of these as your SMTP server and you should be fine. Only thing is you have to find one that works to start with
Still if you ask me easier to just get a yahoo or hotmail account anyways. Catch all email addresses are more hastle than they are worth.

It seems faster to me!
I use googlemail and yahoomail most of the time anyway, as half the time, email sent from my freeserve address never got to its destination.
Back on after four hours of down time, it just suddenly started working again. Thank you for the open DNS suggestion I will now try it, as I don't trust Orange. I really ought to get a dial up alternative too. How do Orange get away with this appalling service?

OpenDNS is great and more reliable than ISP DNS servers, its extraodinary Orange customers have to continually change servers wether its DNS or SMTP to get a service it just goes to show what a tinpot company this is. When i got out it was bad but not half as bad as it is now and they continually take peoples money its disgraceful.
