jw - many thanks for your help.
I shall try and adjust the security settings to WPA alone and see if that does the trick.
I am a novice at this but wary about security. How far will this water down my security overall, albeit my PC is also running McAfee virus / firewall protection as well?

It won't actually water it down at all, infact it's an improvement.
Default if WEP and WPA, it's a compatibiliy mode to try and allow as many devices to connect as possible, although it causes problems itself with a bunch of devices not liking it. WPA is the better option as it's the most secure so you'd be tightening security.
This security is for the wireless itself to prevent other people accessing your shared files/network/internet connection from nearby.

jw & Elhana - thanks for the advice. I took the advice and switched the security setting to WPA (via the Livebox Configuartion settings) but rather than improve access to the net, it seeems to have disconnected my wireless adaptor.
Now, the small "column" icon which shows wireless signal strength has a big cross through it, and its telling me there is no wireless connection. The Livebox is showing it is online ("@" light on Livebox) but no signal is passing betweem adaptor and Livebox.
Perhaps i pressed something I shouldn't have (but I don't think so !), but could someone please tell me how to get the wireless adaptor working. Should I just run the installation cd again (albeit al the drivers / software still seem to be present on the PC).
Thanks again for all the help - sorry I am making such a meal of this.
Are you running through the speedtouch software or just letting windows run the connection?
If it's the speedtouch software open it up,
Go to site survey,
Double click your livebox,
Paste in the WEP key from the Security > Wireless Connection page of the livebox,
Click apply change and see if it connects,
If not then it could be a channel problem, on the same page as the key try changing the channel dropdown and then try to connect again.
I tried again tonight after the nightmare of trying to set up on the livebox.
3 days of fighting with it!
I'm on the internet... hoorah
Thanks JW!
one little question though.... when I'm on the confiration page it says on the left hand side... You must enable JavaScript in your browser.
but my Java is enabled????
I can't change the wi-fi advance bit (Number 7 on your list) configuration.
do you know how to change that.
thanks for your help. excellent and very helpful post. I'd got myself sooo confused!
I managed to sort the java script and I've lowered my security some more.
I just can't get a wireless connection.
I've tried all sorts and I even lost my ethernet connection at one point! got that back but I might have to give up on the wireless for tonight and refresh tomorrow.
It did have strong connection at one point but still couldn't access the web. Now it just wont even connect! dammit.
Ooohh... I take it back... lost the wireless connection when I re-instated all my security! I'm back to 'acquiring network address' - bugger!
I still have the previous modem from Orange, installed on my pc would this cause any conflicts? I'm not sure why this would be ... I've been on oranges own forum site and someone mentioned this.
I'll have another go tonight... nearly 4 days of messing with this thing! nuts! I usually do quite well with problem solving on pc's but I feel as I've gone back to - 'don't have a bloody clue' stage!
I didn't want to remove the previous modem software as I wasn't sure I could get the livebox going and my flatemate has lost the CD for it.
But, I have finally got the ethernet and wi-fi working with the livebox so I'll take it off.
The Wi-fi goes down if I try to secure the livebox though... will try again tonight to fix that.
I think we are suppose to get 2mb speed on the livebox but it's slower than the old modem!? rather disapointing - was at a busy time though?!
I'm wondering if we have a small intermittant fault on our telephone line. We need another handset to test before we can call BT though. (I use to work at a call centre for a telephone company and I know that they will charge if it's an intermittant fault when they try and look for it!)
