I started off with freeserve, my first ADSL suplier, back then you got a USB modem and no limits (512kbps/256kbps) so I was quite happy with that. I'm a big fan of linux and use to download gigs of music, im not going to lie, i did use things like P2P but i thought without a bandwidth limit i would not get letters, after using 43GB of bandwidth in one month they sent me a letter, and the next month, and the next, then threaten to cut me off, during my time with wanadoo i had a an unstable connection, somtimes using dial-up would be quicker!
Glad a site like this has started to sort out Wanadoo but i think other UK ISPs offering poor service should be highlighted. Currently im with Demon, very good, but if your not use to IT you may get confused with some of there stuff as its not documented in an easy to understand manner for someone with out good IT knowlegde.
I was a freeserve Hippy back in 2002 is when I joined, being new to internet I was advised by persons who shall remain nameless to use freeserve; and right from the get go I was having problems..
my first encounter was dialup I subscribed to anytime service but my first bill from BT was for over 100 quid !!so while I was in discussion with freeserve about the reasons BT cut me off, so I had to pay the bill to get back online meanwhile freeserve denied responsability for the premium rate number I was given by one of their minions " we cant be responsable for the numbers you put on your computer" was there response even though the nuber I got i was from freeserve itself..
I would have changed my Isp then but instead I go along with the name change and to save the hassle I subscribe to Wannadoo Broadband, with the attractive lure and promise of 8mgb of broadband instead I end up with a rickty 1.1 mgb broadband which works so slow at times Id be better off with dialup GRRRRRRRR and I pay the same price . What is going on here???
I joined Wanadoo BB after having problems with NTL over their TV service, I also had dial up internet from NTL as well and knowing they would disconnect the line as well I signed up to Wanadoo as they were the only ISP I could find at the time that gave a free modem when you signed up. I signed up to the £17.99 2Gb package and thought it would do me well for 1 year it did as they were not capping their service so I was downloading a lot more than 2Gb as I found out when I came back from a few days away to find my service had gone down to the speed of dial up after only 3 days of the new month. At the beginning of this year my connection started to drop on a regular basis I put it down to the PC needing a good spring clean but in March I did just that dumped all the stuff I wasn't using and wasn't needed at start-up but it was no different then one Sunday near the end of March I couldn't get a connection, I spent 5 hours sorting it out installing the software and reinstalling it along with many other things. This PC was free of all spyware bugs malware ect. when I phoned Wanadoo that evening to get a MAC only for them to want to go through all sorts of stuff again this took over 35 mins and all I wanted was a MAC he finally told me I had the wrong dept. and to phone up again GGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR so I did and this took another 10 minutes to get a MAC emailed to me.
After my chosen new ISP tried to connect me at 2Mb and failed Wanadoo told me that the same MAC could be used to connect me to their service at my present speed, that failed due to a previously used MAC so I phone again to be told they can only issue the same one for 30 days. Not wanting to be with them any longer than I have to I email OFCOM to ask them if this is true they reply is that once a MAC is used they can issue a new one immediately so on Saturday morning I phoned Wanadoo again and was told they can only issue the previous MAC until it expires so I told the Indian guy that the email from OFCOM says I can be issued one immediately, he want to speak to his supervisor, I am left on hold for 5 mins when he comes back he says the supervisor would like to speak to me will I wait, I agree.
When he comes on the line he is English and he tries the have to wait for the 30 days to expire so I read him the email and he said that OFCOM were wrong or I didn't have an email so I said to him put your comments in an email to me and I will forward them to OFCOM his reply was you will have another MAC in a couple of days and put the phone down.
