Hi Guys,
Im hoping you might be able to advise me on a problem. So far i've spent 2 days and countless calls to a call centre in India to try and sort this but no joy. Basically i've upgraded my line from 1meg to 8meg. Connected up my livebox but keep getting "limited or no connection". I have a Realtek RTL8139 ethernet routher running on WinXP SP2 PRO.
I've been through Orange's fault finding process (twice now) and they tell me that it's a problem with my browser and that i must call Internet explorer and/or Firefox??? can anyone clarify this for me as it doesnt seem right to me. My browser works fine on the old 1meg line.
I've downloaded patches to fix possible bugs, swapped cables, lowered network card speed, downloaded WinsockXPFix.exe and i really dont know what else to do. This is really about as far as my tech abilities go and was hoping and praying someone on this site might be able to point me in the right direction.
Im pasting my ipconfig information in the hope it might be of some use or make sense to you guys. Your help will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

If its wireless you're having problems with, try changing the encryption type to either "WEP only" or "WPA only" I recommend the latter as its a much stronger encryption.
since your home network appears to be configured to use the 169.254.xxx.xxx address range, i would guess that the LiveBox internal ip address should be 169.254.1.1
also, how can ipconfig /all be returning the ip address info for a LiveBox?

Strange, make sure the cable is pushed right in both on your comp and the livebox, i know the one that came wth mine was really loose and didnt even clip into the slot. Also make sure the dchp service is enabled on your computer.
Start>run>"services.msc" hit enter, then look for the service and make sure its set to "Automatic"

I thought subnet mask should all be same, normally:
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
IP addresses do not look right to me.
In past I have had problems where the IP address of computer is set to the same as IP address of router - in which case it will not work. They have to be different.

Try unplugging your router/livebox whatever so its completely switched off for about 40 minutes to an hour so the ip address expire completely then plug it back in again so it can assign the addresses from fresh as it looks totally mucked up and as keith says the the Subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0. when you power back up it should assign them correctly.
Regards

From those details I presume that's the ethernet connection to the livebox and the PPP adapter is for a speedtouch or another modem you're using to connect and post with.
Just so everyone understands, they show this is a NIC to Livebox connection problem, it's nothing to do with the broadband connection itself at this stage.
Ok so ethernet, normally the status with those details would be "limited or no connectivity" rather than network cable unplugged so that could potentially indicate NIC driver problems.
The 169....etc address is one generated by windows when it can't receive one from a DHCP server, meaning it can't talk to the livebox correctly.
Has that NIC worked previously?
Have you tried changing to the other ethernet port on the livebox? (red <> yellow)
Have any other ethernet cables you could try?
Could you connect it to a different pc to check?
There's also the option of forcing the IP address but if it can't get it on DHCP this usually doesn't work either, though can in some situations.
Open network connections,
Go into the properties for the ethernet connection,
Highlight Internet Protocol and click properties,
Change to use the following and enter as below:
Primary DNS - 195.92.195.94
Secondary DNS - 195.92.195.95
When you do this it will show as connected even if it's not. Do another ipconfig to make sure the settings have taken and then try and ping/open in internet explorer "192.168.1.1". If it doesn't work change them back to the automatic options it was previously set to.
Thanks for the help guys. Sorry for the delay in replying......had to go to work Good news though. I ended up uninstalling absolutely everything to do with the broadband and router and re-installed. I downloaded the newest software for the router and when i booted up it was working......Very happy now!
Your help was much appreciated though......nice to know that if you become unstuck there is always somewhere to turn.....keep up the good work!
