The wireless is relatively secure but you can turn it off if you don't use it. No chance of someone connecting then and you can turn it back on later if you need.
As for the speed. It's the sync that's the problem, the livebox shows it can go much higher but it is definitely being limited to 1/2 meg. There is no 10 day training period of LLU connections although it may be the line hasn't been shown as completed yet on the system so they may not be able to do anything about it yet anyway. It could potentially change but it's unlikely.
Thanks for the reply Elhana.
I just got home and tested the speed and on average its faster than yesterday, but after doing 5 tests in the past hour or so this is the highest speed Ive got;
Pretty lame that its not even reaching 512kbs, especially when Orange claim I'm on "up to 8mb"!
If I plug in my old Alcatel Speedtouch modem and use that rather than the Livebox will my connection at least run at a stable 608k speed again?
If not, is it worth ringing them to see if they plan to upgrade me / take me off LLU any time soon?

No way to be sure unless you try.

You're unlikely to be able to get any information on any upgrades. You'd need to go up the chain of command a couple of rungs to stand a chance at finding out and that's not likely to be that easy. As for being taken off LLU, it won't happen, it's only done in rare cases and not usually for connections that are working but slow.
Edit: I just called the indian call centre and the guy confirmed I WAS moved to LLU last August.
When I asked about being moved from LLU he told me I'd have to redial a different number because he could only deal with Speedtouch enquiries rather than Livebox ones.
I'll call the other number now and see what they say.

Update:
Just called the other number, another person with a really strong foreign accent.
She seemed to think deleting my cookies and history would somehow solve my problems. I was then instructed to disable my firewall [wtf?] and run a speed test. Results showed 0.2mbs up & down.
She agreed this was shocking and has "submitted me for a 24 hour line test"
I have to ring back tomorrow for the results.
Somehow I dont think this will solve the problem.
Lame :[
I was stuck on 608 for 7 months, two complaints to ISPA and I was assigned a NAMED customer service person who sorted the problem in just over a week, now get 6.183Mbs!
See my thread LLU speed problem solved.

Just read it, thats really good news; hope is out there!
What exactly did you write in your complaint to the ISPA, that Orange were breaching their contract by keeping you on 608k?
If you go to the ISPA web site and choose "make a complaint" you get a form to fill in on-line. I just filled in all the details, when the speed increase should have taken place, the fact that I had been complaining for so long with no effective action etc. There is also a multiple choice drop down list, one option is "slow speeds", also poor service etc.
Be prepared for the 1st complaint to have no effect, wait 5 working days then go back and submit a follow up complaint (it asks you if you have complained before). Orange are required to respond in writing in 5 working days otherwise you can submit a further complaint to the ISPA. The letter I got in response from Orange gave some b*lls***t about service slowing at times of peak demand, but when I phoned the customer service rep (name and direct line number included in the letter) and pointed out that the fastest speed I EVER got was about 528Kb/sec and that the speed upgrade had never been successfully completed I got some pretty quick action. It also helped that their technical people had told me on several occasions that my line would support above 6Mb/sec (I also got them to put it in the notes on the Orange computer system). My guess is that they actually have to send a real person to the exchange to sort this out which costs money, also as long as your speeds are slow, they save on bandwidth. It's only when you show that you won't lie down and take it that they sort things out!
Hope this is helpful
Thanks for the info shauncwalsh. I'll give it maybe a week more before I make an official complaint.
Just called the "help line" to get the results of the line test and got through to Terry in Middlesborough [YAY! Finally a polite English person!]
In response to being capped at 608k
He said for some reason I havent been upgraded from 608k since I upgraded from half a meg to "up to 8mb wireless and talk" nearly 14 days ago which is very strange as his tests confirm I should easily be getting at least 3mb. He wasnt sure why this hadnt happened and said "he'd look into it".
In response to the very slow speed [0.2mbs]:
He went on to say that the 24 hour line test which was submitted yesterday DID find a problem and that engineers were on the case and I should call back tomorrow even though it could take as long as wednesday to solve. He said the engineers should fix the problem on site and this would solve the slow speeds.
I mentioned I had heard that being moved from LLU to something like ADSLmax may result in an increase in speed and he said that the branch of Orange that handled this closed at 9pm [its 9:02pm]
Looks like i'm going to have to spend more time and money calling these call centres until I start even getting close to some results. Lame.
