[quote="Elhana"]It's very easy for a small scale problem to slip through the cracks especially when it's one of the more technical ones to fix.
One of the questions that puzzles me is why it is only a small scale problem. It appears to affect those using a non-Livebox router-modem (or one which doesn't automatically employ MSS clamping), or a Speedtouch USB modem, but from what you say only on some exchanges.
When Orange install LLU it appears that they sometimes (mis)configure the ppp negotiations to use a MTU of 1492, which is where the problem starts, instead of a MTU of 1500. But why in some cases but not in others?
Hi everyone, just found this thread and it's exactly what has been happening to me in the last few days. I can access Google and some other sites (including Orangeproblems, thankfully) but not others - starts to open the web page but then just hangs. Also can receive e-mail using Outlook Express but not send. At first I thought it was my AV software or firewall playing up, but no... To cut a long story short, in the end I went as far as reinstalling Windows, but the problem has persisted, now I know why!
I have tried to download Dr TCP from the site in the link, but - you guessed it - it's one of the sites I can't access!
I would be very grateful if someone could e-mail me the .exe file for Dr TCP (I think it's drtcp019.exe, or could be a later version?) The best e-mail address for me is Alex.Cull@Tesco.net. That would be terrific, & I'll let everyone know how I get on.
Hi, just tried it - unfortunately, it doesn't open that link either... Yes, I see what you mean, anyone could send me something nasty & calling it Dr TCP... Maybe I can phone a friend and get them to send it... This would have to happen at Easter weekend, when everyone's probably out!
Oh well, we'll see...
All the best,
Alex
Hi, just to say to the Admin many thanks! It's working perfectly now. Once the file was unzipped, all I needed to do was go to the "Dial-Up Adapter" line at the bottom of the box, and where the value in the MTU field was 0 (default), changed it to 1458, and saved the settings.
Now I can access all the sites that were blocked, and can also send e-mails with Outlook Express, also can get updates for my AV program.
Thanks again, what a lifesaver!
All the best,
Alex
Hi Keith, I'm not sure where the RWIN value gets entered - is this the TCP Receive Window field? If so, the value I see at the moment is 32768 - I didn't enter this, so maybe it's a default value or it's reading this from my system? I heard somewhere (this forum maybe?) that the following values are optimum - MTU 1458 & RWIN 12762, or MTU 1430 & RWIN 13900. But all I changed was the MTU, and it seemed to work, so I didn't go any further.
Re Outlook Express, I was receiving e-mails with no problem, but I couldn't send (this started at exactly the same time as the website-blocking problem.) I kept getting this error message: "The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.wanadoo.co.uk (1)', Server: 'smtp.wanadoo.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10051, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E". Once I changed the MTU value to 1458, this problem cleared up at once, and never reappeared.
The packet fragmentation seems somewhat random, though google often works (???), so it could have easily been the cause of not being able to send email and not related to the email problems at the moment.

Can you explain what you mean? I was thinking that if you change your MTU it could solve the problem of being unable to send email.

It possibly could help but I highly doubt it really.
AFAIK MTU is all to do with packet fragmentation. When this happens it seems only a few websites will work, sometimes none, sometimes email will work sometimes it won't.
From all I've heard of it, apart from google it's very random what will and won't work. Generally though it seems websites are much more commonly effected than email.
Is there any chance of hosting the kitz fix here? When my connection was borked, this was one of the few websites I could access, and I've just got a PM from somebody saying the same thing. Unfortunately I couldn't hit kitz (so I had to appeal to a friend), and neither can he (so he has to appeal to me).

Hello Carrion
We've noted your request...
Yes, strange as it may seem, OrangeProblems.co.uk is one of the few sites that is accessible when Orange users have issues with their settings! Just as well really!
We will get in touch with Kitz and ask their permission to put their Tweaking your MTU settings resource on OrangeProblems - but... it's theirs not ours! So we will have to have permission before we do this.
