I have suddenly lost internet access. It was working fine with the usual dropping off we all seem to be suffering from. I went out for a couple of hours, came back home and I could not access the internet apart from my banking systems, Google and the National Trust, plus some odds and sods sites. It finds the site waits for a reply but never seems to get one. I have tried with IE and Mozilla Firefox, same result. I was using Windows 98. After endless phone calls and being told it was my compute r by OrangeI reformatted my hard disc and started again, same problem. I upgraded to 2000 and still the same problem. Someone down the road has just told me they have the same problem too. We are both ex Wanadoo/Freeserve users. Any ideas? Someone asked is Orange using a proxy server? I have also been told that Orange moved their UK servers to France the day I started having problems, although Orange deny this although they wrote to my brother saying they planned a major upgrade.
If you are using a modem/router, then try setting the MRU for greater than 1500 (say 1600). It works for me - it may or may not work for you. There is no reason why it should work, but it appears to be the nature of Orange's misconfiguration of their upstream router that fragmentation request packets are correctly dealt with if presented with this MRU value on ppp negotiation.
If this does not work, see if your modem/router has a MSS clamping option. If not, try PPPoE instead of PPPoA, as many modem/routers will automatically use MSS clamping when configured to use PPPoE. Note that with LLU, both PPPoA and PPPoE are accepted.
If that doesn't work, set the MTU on your ethernet interface to 1492 or less. (It is quite complicated to do with Windows unfortunately.) That will definitely work.
By the way, I have e-mailed Orange about this. Basically they are not interested. They said the only modem/router they support is Livebox. Presumably Livebox does MSS clamping automatically.
They are almost certainly going to lose customers over this but they don't seem to be bothered about that.

I am using the Speedbox 330 Orange sent me, they never mentioned I should get a router. As I have an old computer I do not have an Ethernet port anyway which I believe I need for their Livebox. Interestingly enough, the Speedbox 330 does seem to work with my laptop which runs XP. Customer Service seems to have passed Orange by.
My usb modem packed in a week ago and I got a new free Speedtouch 330 from Orange yesterday. On installing/connecting I found I had exactly the same problem ChrisV noted in his/her other thread, right down to being able to access Google UK but not the Beeb.
Ironically, this is one of the very few websites I could access.
I had a friend download and email me the fix in the thread Elhana linked (I couldn't access the site myself), and after a reboot it worked.
Like ChrisV I'm in North London, and currently have a 91.104 IP.
I spoke to tech support last night and after various standard script 'clear cache'ings it was clear she no idea what the f****. KeBul's fix was posted last August. Orange are due an angry letter.
It may have been posted then but it's a rather uncommon problem and without an extra program it involves editing the registry, I believe. Not exactly something advisable at the best of times.

So, what do you suggest for customers who aren't quite as persistent at google as I am, nor as happy to tamper with settings? Tech support couldn't identify the problem despite a couple of people here with identical symptoms.
It's very easy for a small scale problem to slip through the cracks especially when it's one of the more technical ones to fix.
If you can't work out the problem yourself or edit the registry then really the only other option would be to get in a technician to sort it for you. To be honest I wouldn't dream of messing with the registry, on a phone call where it's so easy for things to go wrong, it's just asking for trouble!
I am over the moon with the Dr Kitz fix. Once I had the solution, it was so easy, after the frustration of talking to Orange Technical support for hours on end and no internet access. I did get in a technician before I found this board, whose diagnosis was Orange is rubbish get a new ISP.

What MTU and Rwin did you use?
What speeds are you getting.
Keith
I used 1430 MTU, 166800 RWIN. I am getting around 5.1mb speed, however my exchange is quite a way away and so we never get full speed here anyway. I live in Berkshire so I assume that Orange are moving west with their LLU devastation.
Having said everything is wonderful, I went on this evening around 10.30pm and the line must have dropped out a dozen times in as many minutes. I have had trouble logging on with PPP error, invalid user id/password, remote server not communicating... Then a few seconds later everything works again, until the next time. Also having said I was getting 5.1 mbps, the speed has dropped right down. On the positive side Mr Kitz was able to help a friend who could not access the internet either, so I suppose that was good. If my company offered such an appalling service, we would not have any customers, how does Orange get away with it?
