I am trying to update an old freeserve website that was made years ago. I have read the posts relating to this, but if any one could help me with trying to use ftp to do this it would be a great help.
The address is www.thorndrury.fsnet.co.uk. I have tried accessing the site through sitebuilder and ftpmysite on the Orange website, to no avail as it doesn't show up(although the site is still online). I have tried using ftp through a browser but am unsure what the address should be as I don't know too much about ftp. Would it just be ftp://www.thorndrury.fsnet.co.uk? When trying this I get a message saying "the session was terminated" or similar. If get an ftp program like terrapin would this address work? Lastly is the username/password the same the ones for accessing emails?
Apologies if these questions seem stupid but this is not my freeserve account, I am trying to update the site for my dad. The reason we want to keep the freeserve address is that this is on his bussiness cards. I have emailed Orange twice with no response.

Hello jimmyS
Firstly, if you want to ftp the site, from what I have seen, you need to use an Orange dial-up connection! This does sound strange, but apparently there has been some issues with trying to ftp old sites via the Orange broadband network.
Secondly, take a look at our Orange Settings page. There should be enough info there for you!

Hello again...
I found a printout from ages ago when I set up a dial-up account with Freeserve... Back in the days... The information supplied at the time (and I have put your settings in) would have been:
Your log-in name for the Freeserve Webspace FTP server is:
thorndrury.fsnet.co.uk
Your log-in password for the Freeserve Webspace FTP server is: Your password that you chose when you originally created this account
Hope this helps!

EDIT
I have just tried the above using an ftp client (over and Orange Broadband connection) and it will not allow me ftp access, although strangely enough, it does connect, as it tells me how much space I have used and how much space I have left - see image below! Maybe it will work over a dial-up connection???
Unfortunately I've already tried these through the browser with no luck. I can't download ws_ftp etc. as I'm at work at the mo - I don't know if this would make any difference to using a browser.
Trouble is I don't think the old dial-up connection is still there to try that as my dad now has broadband at his office. I'll have to check.
I don't need to use ftp if another alternative is available as it is quite a basic site and an upload form would be ok.
Even if I could just upload one page with a javascript redirect to some other webspace that would be ok...
I have some new information - I hope this may be of help for any in the same predicament as me.
Apparently you cannot use ftp or any other means to update a freeserve site unless you are using the original dial-up connection with which you received the webspace in the first place. It seems that if your account is suspended it can be reactivated at the Orange website, which propts you to download and install a program. Presumably this configures modem settings, dialup number etc. to start reusing the connection, although I haven't had a chance to test this yet.
Looks like you definately need the old connection, although the response email said "an Orange internet connection"; maybe an Orange broadband connection will work? I'm using BT broadband.
I was able to update my freeserve site using Orange broadband on a speedtouch adsl modem. It's only since i "upgraded" and got a livebox that I am having problems.
It seems as though the livebox can see the ftp server but stops your PC from getting at it, almost like a firewall.
Open internet explorer,
Enter 192.168.1.1 into the address bar and click go,
Click the link on the page that comes up and enter "admin" for both username and password before clicking ok,
Click Security then Firewall on the left,
Select the low (disable) option and submit.
I have found that turning off the Livebox firewall is not enough. I have to disable the windows firewall too. Then I can use FTP to send and recieve files up to 2meg with good speed. Hope this helps.
Jim.
