is it possible to use my old Sky router (Netgear DG834GT) with my new Orange broadband starter?
I only got rid of Sky because we moved house and couldn't get it here.
It's a real pain with the speedtouch USB Modem
I'm not certain if you can use the Sky router. You'd need to enter your Orange username and password and as far as I understand Sky use some automated system to authenticate the router. If you can enter your details on it's config then it should work, if it won't let you then you're probably not going to be able to use it.
It's nothing to do with the line, purely how and what Sky have locked up in the router and I'm not certain you can get to the username and password as it's done automatically when connecting to Sky. They wouldn't normally want users messing with that so locking it away would mean it's one less thing to check and fix.
sounds to me like Sky have simplified the firmware so the settings are hidden, it could be possible to edit if you managed to get ftp working on it and browsing the filing system (sort of like people do with soft-modded xboxs) but its unlikely that it will use standard mime types so i reckon you will need a different modem to connect to a different isp.
I also have a Sky netgear router and have just signed up for Orange broadband despite hearing nothing buy bad things.
Anyway I plan to give this a go tonight to try and avoid having to install the rubbish Orange livebox thing which seems far to complicated. Also couldn't get the livebox to install as the CD just kept bring a popup window up.
Ill let you know if i have any luck with it.
Also does anyone have a standard netgear router (non Sky) and does that work ok?
I've used a regular Netgear 834G (I think that's its name) for over two years now. Might be Three! Never had any problem with it (well, one teeny one to do with FTPing, which I mention in a thread below).
Is it possible to upgrade the firmware on the Sky ones? Which would presumably over ride whatever Sky have done to it? There's a button somewhere that takes you back to 'factory settings' but I guess those would be the settings that Sky put on.
I'm no expert but I'm sure someone who is would know how to hack it. Have you tried the Netgear forums? That strikes me as a place to ask. (Dunno if Netgear might have some deal with Sky though, to remove any advice on how to hack it.)
