It can be used as an FTP server. This way I can access my files from anywhere I can get Internet access. However, this is reliant upon my knowing the IP address. I am sure I am not the only one who finds my router is disconnected typically twice a day by Orange, such that I get a new IP address each time. Thus my intention of remote access is impossible.
I rang the "technical" helpline this morning and got a lady in India. I don't think she had heard of "static ip address" when I mentioned it. Anyway after putting me on hold she came back and told me that Orange issues its IP addresses dynamically (yes I know this already) and then gave me the IP addresses of the the two Orange domain name servers! Did I miss something or is the Orange technical help desk not technical at all? What use is knowing the DNS ip addresses? I want to access my network hard disk, not theirs!
I'm thinking of moving to Tiscali or Eclipse as they offer static IP addresses. Any comments on these or others people?
There's a bunch of sites that do this around, most of them free. Even better there's a section of the livebox config to enter the details so it does all the updating for you.
Thanks. I wasn't familiar with this service. I have set up an account and installed the IP address updater client software. However, for this to work, it does of course require a PC to be switched on all the time.
As already explained, I had wanted to just use my Network Attached Storage hard disk (the Buffalo Linkstation mentioned above) as a remotely accessible FTP server, with another Linkstation at my father's house connected to his broadband router as an off-site backup (we're unlikely to suffer house fires or burglarys on the same day!). I can still do this using dyndns of course, but its not so nearly as elegant when I have to leave the PC switched on.
So do you agree the "tech support" helpdesk's stating of the nameserver IPs was a complete red herring and shows the ineptitude of their staff?

This is where you're wrong, as I did mention in my last post. You need to log into the livebox, 192.168.1.1, go into Configuration > Advanced. Within this section, I forget the page title, is where you enter your dynamic dns details and the livebox itself then does the updating for you, no need for the PC to be on running the program.

I don't know how India are setup but they're probably just not told about static IP's simply because Orange don't do them.

I was going to ask you about this. I don't actually have a livebox as I have been a customer since Freeserve days. However, a friend (whom I recommended Orange to) does have a spare livebox. It's spare because I told him not to use it and to get a 3Com ADSL wireless router instead for £40 - the livebox only supports 6 clients.
Is it possible to plug the router into the back of the livebox using an ethernet cable?
In fact I've just found that my 3Com router (3CRWDR101A-75) has a DDNS settings page - great ! So no need to use the livebox for this.
One these changes are promulgated through the DNS, should I be able to FTP into my own computer using the web browser? Or do I need to be on a machine "outside" the network?
Once it's updated you simply use the host address you chose to access your FTP. Shouldn't matter where you try it from (remember you'll need to setup port forwarding/a virtual server in the router to allow external connections) but I'd recommend checking it on your system first where it should just redirect to go over the network and also to get a friend to try it so you can fiddle with settings etc if needed.
