Hi, I have a bit of a strange problem here. I have set up my Orange livebox using the manual installation method, and have a nice fast internet connection 6134 down 384 up.
When I switch on the livebox and boot the computer I have an internet connection instantly and can browse normally. However if I leave the connection idle for between half an hour to an hour (using Photoshop or Office 2003 for example) the next time I attempt to download my email or open a browser session I cannot connect!
I should explain I am connected via ethernet cable, not wirelessly, I do not use the wireless facility. My Livebox has been updated to the latest firmware version and according to the LAN indicator on the taskbar I am connected at 100.0 Mbps. When I open network connections and view the status of my connection it also reports me as connected and no problems found.
I have opened a command prompt and tried to ping the BBC website to no avail, If I then "repair" the connection in network connections my internet access returns briefly but then fails again.
My only solution is to reboot the computer but not the livebox! Then all is well again.
Has anybody any idea what the problem is? Because I'm stumped!
This problem sounds familar as I had this when I first connected my Livebox, it lasted for about the first five days. The only thing I changed was to turn off the firewall on the Livebox and just use my computers own(M'fee). After that it, it seemed to sort itself out and after disconnecting after being idle all the time, it hasnt disconnected in almost 3 weeks since then. Keep with and keep changing settings on your Livebox, sooner or later you'll find one that works
To me that sounds driver related. I presume that when the connection simply stops working if you unplug the ethernet cable and then reconnect it it works for a short while before going off again same as for the repair option.
You could try reinstalling your network card/port's drivers and see if that helps any.
Thank you both for your replies, this also appears to be an intermittent problem! Last night I used my computer and connection in the same way as I previously described and had no problem at all, the connection was idle for approximately two hours, and when I came back to it I fully expected to find the same problem, but it performed faultlessly!
Elhana, my network ports are are part of my Asus A8N-Sli deluxe motherboard and are identified as Marvell Yukon 88E8001/8003/8010 and I have the most up to date drivers for them.
On further examination of my network drivers in device manager, I have found an option which has been selected by default which allows the computer to power down these ports after a period of inactivity!
Could this possibly be the solution? Your comments would be appreciated.

If there was an error or corruption with the drivers then it wouldn't make any difference if they were old or new.

Could do, won't harm anything by turning that off and seeing if it helps.
I don't want to appear overly optimistic here, but I downloaded and ran Dr TCP and adjusted my RWIN settings. Since then I have not had any recurrence of the disconnections when the connection was idle that I was experiencing.
Fingers crossed that this has solved my particular problem!
