I've just taken out an internet contract with Orange - I'm already a mobile customer so I qualify for the 'free' internet. I've taken the 'up to 8meg' package. Although all line tests (even the ones Orange have done) say my line can handle 6.5 to 8mg, the confirmation email Orange sent to me stated that the maximum I can get is 0.5mg. The more posts I read on this site, the more I suspect the worst. Orange customer support have said they don't know why I"m not getting faster speeds, (I live in Zone 1 London). I'm on the Southbank exchange which I believe is LLU. Today the customer support told me that it would take at least 5 days to find out what's wrong, but I suspect this is a delaying tactic, and basically their equipment won't let me go faster than this. I did glean an interesting bit of info from one customer support guy before being put onto a supervisor (who went on to deny this), who basically said that Orange's equipment wasn't as good as BT's and that's why you won't get a good speed even though you live in central London.
How does this sound to other people? Will they come back and tell me that 0.5 is definitely the fastest I can get? I curse myself for going with this 'free offer' after all the problems they've caused me with my mobile contract in the past. The only reason I didn't leave Orange this time round was the promise of free internet... What a fool!
Unfortunately, you should get used to the idea that you'll be on 0.5meg for the foreseeable future whilst you stay with Orange. Join the club, take a seat, and wait for your number....The line is growing.
With respect to the mobile offer which included 'Free broadband", no doubt this sterling piece of advertising has done the job. Many have fallen foul to this 'fabulous offer'- Sadly it doesn't state that your speed is likely to be at the ar$e-end of the broadband range.
I'm going to phone Orange on Monday after the 5 days they quoted me, probably to be fobbed off with 0.5mb is the fastest your line can handle.
When I called to set up Broadband the Orange broadband bloke on the other end did line test and said "good news, you're line is capable of over 6.5mb". I said - great, sign me up.
Now if he'd have said "we've run the line test, and you can have broadband, but only 0.5mb" I'd have said "free or not, that's not good enough. No thanks".
Shouldn't this mean I can get out of the contract now based on misleading information they gave me?
Sadly, thats the M.O of Orange, they'll tell you that yes you can handle high speed- what they can't tell you is that it isn't going to be with them. If you run speeds tests from different sites you will see that your line can handle it, but thats only if you went with another ISP.
You are in the same boat myself and numerous others here are on. You may be able to annul you contract but only with alot of effort and kicking and screaming at Orange- most likely at the cost of your health, or you can payoff the rest of your contract and get free that way.
