My first an only Internet provider was Freeserve which I understand became Wanadoo and is now Orange!
In over 10 years i've had little or no problems with connection, speeds etc., but on browsing the Orange Broadband website realise I am paying £27.99 for internet access with no frills attached. No FREE unlimited calls to landlines etc., No wireless modem. Only 512kb speed etc.,
Is there any reason for me to expect problems if I upgrade to 8mb connnection and take advantage of better deals?
I'm wondering if my old connection runs on an 'older clearer line' as it has been suggested that the new connection offers will mean lots of new people, jammed lines, disconnecyons etc.,
(Excuse the terminology, I have limited Broadband knowledge :>)
I fully agree with Ciderfex. If you choose to go for the £19.99 wireless package you will then be tied into another 12 month contract. Im pretty sure you WILL be disappointed with the speed/serivce. If I were you I would change to another ISP now. Dont let them offer you any special deals to stay, just leave and choose someone else.
I not too clear as to why I should get out now? The service I get at the moment is and always has been without problems! Is it that I will be put onto another set up if I opt for the £19.99 package?
LLU is where Orange put there own equipment in your local exchange

Depends whether Orange have installed LLU in your local exchange. If they have then you will be put on this. Avoid at all cost. Orange have now admitted that they have a problem with this equipment that they are struggling to resolve. Chances are that as you appear to be on ADSL then you will be moved to ADSLMax but no sure way of knowing without checking you exchange. Post your postcode and someone should be able to tell you. However, if its not LLU'd then theres no guarantee for the furure. Orange may come along and install LLU 1 or two months into your contract or never.
As to the comments that someone made that its pretty sure you WILL be disappointed with the speed/service. Firstly the speed. There are many on ADSLMax that have more than adequate speeds. We just don't hear enough from them as the tendency here is to highlight the negative side. Secondly the service. Now here there is a massive problem. If you are lucky enough to be upgraded onto ADSLMax and everything goes fine then no problem. If it does not go to plan then expect the worse. Book yourself into the nearest clinic for a planned nervous breakdown or depression.
Personally, if you can be guaranteed to be put on ADSLMax and remain on it, you get good speeds without any setup problems, your talk service works within a week of being upgraded and you have some understanding of how the whole setup works, because you'll need it given the inabilty of Oranges tech support to fix anything beyond a factory reset, then it is worth considering. Does'nt sound to promising, does it!!!!!
OK let me be a little bit positive.
Until the beginning of the year I also was on the 27.99 1Mb broadband package. Just a little bit frightened to give up a stable connection.
Between Xmas and new year I took the plunge and went for the 8Mb 19.99 package.
My Livebox arrived 3 January, 7 days after applying. Connected everything up but had problems with the CD, no go from the menu. Opened my browser, entered 192 . 168 . 1 . 1 (without the spaces), ADMIN and ADMIN for user and password, entered my account name and password on the next page. Sync'd at about 2Mb/s straight off. Next day the phone was working.
I have had no problems since, I'm on ADSLmax, except some speed drop. I found that was due to 'internal noise' on my extension phone lines(it's like a rats nest under the floor (two phone extensions and two Sky boxes). Having cut the redundant wires on the extension wires (only the blue wires on pins 3 & 5 are necessary) I improved my noise margin and my IP Profile is now steady at 3.5Mb/s.
As long as my Exchange does not go to LLU I'm happy. By the way I'm also about 3 miles from the exchange so only expected about 2.5Mb/s
Brian
PS Orange even refunded the unexpired part of the 27.99 month!
Very similair scenario to myself except It took sometime to get my talk service to ring for incoming calls. In the end I fixed it by changing my number in the member centre then changing it back to my original. Simple really, but Orange did not have a clue. They struggle with supporting internet. Give them a completely different product like VOIP and things were bound to go pear shaped.
You, like others, obviously have a good understanding of how the system is set up and can manage to resolve your issues.
It is the less able and less technical who suffer as they try to get problems resolved by phoning Orange and speak to someone who is equally struggling or even less able as they drone away through their never ending script.
