Hi, I'm new to the forum but joined because basically none of the people in our house are computer literate except me and even then pushing it at 16.. We recently switched to the Orange isp and found everything working perfectly with the wired ethernet connection. We decided that we wanted to have the desktop computer wireless and the laptop wireless so without the disk we connected it up. The speed of the laptop upstairs ranges from from between 6.5mb to 7mb yet on the desktop which is in the same room as the livebox we can only achieve speeds of 3mb - 3.5mb. We use a dell wireless card with the laptop and an inventel 802.11g dongle for the desktop? Can someone please help? I've tried everything!!

Does the desktop pc use a bunch of USB devices, also any idea if it's USB 1 or 2?

We use usb 2.0 we have one other usb port for the wireless mouse and keyboard, we got reccomended this by a friend to save on using the usb ports.

In that case it's not the USB connection itself by the sounds of it.

Does the laptop keep it's same connection performance when it's in the same position as the desktop?

just conducted two speed tests on both systems in almost the same place at almost the same time the results are :

Are you using a USB hub to give you more USB ports? If so, is the inventel 802.11g dongle plugged into the USB hub? If so, this could be your problem.

If you are using a USB hub, you should not use this for a wireless adapter. The wireless adapter should be plugged directly into the USB port on the computer.
