I have been trying to change from Wanadoo Broadband to TalkTalk since early April. On requesting a MAC code, they said they would email it to me (that was their only accepted method). They didn't of course, so I called - I was then given an LLU code (over the phone) - well of course TalkTalk don't recognise this and the only way to leave is to accept two week's downtime, which I can't do at present.
Is this a conspiracy to trap people who want to leave or is it really technical limitations?

Some ISPs will accept the funny LLU MAC. It does seem very wrong to me though that Wanadoo were able to unilaterally switch people over to LLU without informing them that it would mess up migrations, and connections , and cost (leaving) customers money. Before I was lucky enough to find that my new ISP did accept the LLU MAC, I was thinking of asking on the newsgroup uk.legal.moderated about the legality of what Wanadoo did. Morally they should pay the connection fee with the new ISP but I doubt the law sees it that way

Anyone know?
It is technical limitations. Lots of ISP's now use Local Loop Unbundling as it allows them to put their own equipment in exchanges without being reliant on BT's lines. Lot's of providers don't accept LLU MAC codes and this is purely a compatibility issue. It's not a conspiracy to make people stay with a certain provider, and it is a problem that will be ironed out in the near future.
