Hi everyone. I'm sure this topic has been posted 100's of times but i'd appreciate it if someone can help (or point me to a link which has some advice)
I went onto Orange (8MB unlimited) yesterday and my connection speed has at least halved compared to what I was getting with BT.
I have been running speed tests online and it shows I get an average of 480 kbps download and 380 kbps upload. Previously I was on 1000+ with a 1mb package. Orange and BT tell me my line can take upto 2mb.
Any idea why I am getting such rubbish results. Are there tests I can run on my set up to make sure I am correctly configured etc?
I also see a lot posted about LLU - what is this?
If anyone can help it would be most appreciated and sorry if this is an obvious duplication of topic. Orange Tech Support have been useless so far.
For the first 10 days your line will go through a testing period in order to set your speed at its optimum. Whilst this is happening you can expect speeds to fall and indeed you may incur some disconnections.
LLU is where Orange place their own line equipment in the exchange.
My speed was unstable during the first 10 days. Just dont get your hopes up of getting anywhere near 8Mb. My speed eventually settled on 2.7Mb. Quite often its below this and ONCE it went to 3Mb. Im also on LLU. You maybe lucky and get higher speeds. Post your results either way, when the line settles.

You're on ADSL Max and not LLU as your upload speed is over 288kbps.

There can be numerous reasons for the poor speed like problems with your wiring, the setup or it just running slow for no real reason during the training period.
There are a couple of things you can do. First run a speed test through the BT site. http://speedtester.BT.com/
Note the upload, download and IP profile and post them here.
Next is to get the line stats from your modem/router. If you're using a livebox log into it's config pages and go into system info. On there copy the attenuation, noise margin, upstream, downstream and attainable here and we can give more info about the line itself.

Apart from checking how you have things setup there's very little they can do until the 10 day training period is up as speed faults cannot be submitted until then.

I ran the test on the site you mentioned and only got a speed of 231 kbps!
I also ran using http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/
and got results of 478 download and 380 upload both of which again are pretty typical for the past 24hrs.
How do I find my Livebox log and system info?
Does anyone know much about contention rates? I was told Orange are 50:1 for this. Is this normal or not?
Thanks for all the advice so far. Any more help would be much appreciated.

You missed the IP profile which is pretty important with speed problems.

Open internet explorer,
enter 192.168.1.1,
click the link on the page username and password are by default both "admin",
click the system information link on the left,
all the info needed is within the ADSL section.

It's pretty normal for ADSL connections although some providers offer different contention rates.
I'm seriously thinking of canning Orange immediately within my rights and going onto something like Virgin Cable who offer 10MB or 4MB packages. Anyone done this / anyone know of issues with cable?

Anyone else in Milton Keynes with the same problems?
I'm so irate with Orange at the moment. Something clearly is wrong if both of us in the same area have noticed huge drops in performance.
Looking at the information from my test it says my attainable download rate kbps should be 3296. How come I can't get anywhere near this. Still running at 460 this morning! If I could get anywhere around 2000 I would be satisfied.
Thats the main useful part. The box thinks the line can do about 3296 maximum. You're connect at 3008 which means best profile you can currently get is 2.5meg. This is purely talking about the connection between the exchange and your box, at this point, as you're on ADSL Max, there is no Orange involvement with this part.
Attenuation is fairly high showing your line is probably quite long, margin just over 6 gives little room for speed improvement as it is. (possible to improve if wiring etc is a factor) Interleave is turned on showing the system beleived there was some sort of instability in the connection at some point.

Do you need any more information?
There's only one thing more needed which now is the most important part. The IP Profile. This limits connection speeds in order to preserve stability and give a margin for the signal to change without causing it to disconnect. You can get that by doing a speedtest through the BT site.
http://speedtester.BT.com/
If the profile was showing 1/2 meg then that would explain things and, providing those stats are stable, it should go back up within 3 days. If it's showing a profile of 1meg or more then that means there is likely some problem which needs to be looked into, once the 10 day training period is up. It can and will on occasion be bad throughout the training and settle once it's over. It really is best to wait that out and see what things are like then.

That may be hard as you're now technically in contract and the line needs to be given the 10 days to see how it goes before you can really make judgements on it.

Finally I have some progress! After much complaining to Orange they asked for an engineer report on the line which identified a fault which they seem to have fixed. I am now up to 1400kbps download and 380 upload.
I tried running the test on the speedtester website but it only gives me a download speed. no information on upload speed or the IP profile people were talking about. Where do you find this information.
To anyone out there having problems hassle Orange to make sure they do line checks.

I'm truly amazed. After all the stuff I have been reading I really wasnt expecting them to fix anything at all. Imagine my surprise when my download speed quadrupled overnight!
Ultimate, fortunately for you, those on ADSLMAX have a much better connection than those on LLU. However, your joy may be short lived- you could be put onto the LLU network at any time...
