I'm relatively new to Broadband and I'm not sure what is normal and what is abnormal. Every so often and particularly if I have not changed to another website for several minutes, I get this message:-
"Work Offline.
No connection to the Internet is currently available. To view Internet content that has been saved on your computer, click 'Work Offline'. Click 'Try Again'to attempt to connect."
Clicking 'Try Again' always re-establishes the connection.
Is this normal on Broadband? If not, where should I look to try to cure this annoyance?
a) Internet explorer
b) Windows XP Media Center
c) Hewlett Packard (the computer's manufacturer)
d) Orange Livebox Broadband settings
Grateful for any clues guidance or suggestions.
P.S. The 'Work Offline' message has just occurred as I was finishing typing this posting!!
How are you connecting to the livebox, ethernet or wireless? It's almost as if it's losing the connection and reconnecting as soon as you tell it you want to try connecting again.
We have an HP Pavilion 7670 desktop wired to the Livebox and a Compaq laptop connected wirelessly. The laptop was bought just before Xmas, the desktop just after.
Elhana,
It's certainly happening on both the desktop and the laptop - I cannot say that I've noticed anything odd with the lights on the Livebox mainly because I'm not aware of the problem until I need to change the webpage or website.
Well if it happens to both at the same time then that makes it sound like it's a problem with the livebox itself. When it happens try checking through control pannel, network connections, right click on the connect for whichever pc it is and look at the status. Is it showing connected and on the support tab is there still a numbered IP address?
BTW when you click to reestablish the connection how long does it take, instantly or several seconds? Best to check that with the wired pc.
Elhana,
The re-connection is immediate on both machines and has never failed to re-connect when the "Retry" buuton is clicked. I am not certain if it happens at the same time on both machines. I'll look at the network connections on the wired desktop this evening as you suggest.
I have been using Firefox as my browser yesterday evening and the apparent connection loss problem did not occur..........so perhaps it is not a Livebox puzzle after all but something not quite right with Internet Explorer 7. I am going to have a search through the Microsoft site and/or put the problem on a more general forum.
I've been searching the internet and, on another forum (anetforums, com), I found that the problem goes back to 2002! There were several fixes offered (one involved dabbling with the registry which always makes me feel a bit uneasy) but the one that seems to have worked for me is:-
Start>Control Panel>Network Connections, right-click "Local Area Connection", choose Properties and then uncheck "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity"
LoL, all that should do it stop the little message popping up telling you that. If it does help then it's either coincidence or it points to problems with the drivers or windows itself.
