It's far better to write (and keep a copy), send it recorded delivery then you have proof that you have cancelled and on what date.

The letter should clearly state that you do not accept their offe ...

If you cancel your account then it should cancel pretty much immediately. Anytime's on a rolling monthly contract so all that happens is you don't make anymore payments and it just ends at that point. ...
